I am a Professor of History at the United States Naval Academy in Annapolis. In spring 2023, I was named the inaugural Speedwell Professor of International Studies, an honor I will hold until 2028. My primary research focuses on modern Latin America, specifically interstitial places like the Colombian Archipelago of San Andrés and Providencia, and Caribbean Central America. Most importantly, I examine the lived experiences of African-descended peoples and their political ecologies. I have conducted multi-sited research and study in Central America, specifically Costa Rica and Panama.
